    ESPN Sport Science

Hi Jim, From memory the compromise with the Ping clubs was that they allowed them to be grandfathered out, rather than banned immediately - could be wrong though. Now I'm wondering how many bowlers will turn up next week with square-faced sanding marks in their gear... ;)

    Relaxing of thumb

On reading wac4504's post, the only thing I can think of is that the slug in his ball was not fully driven down to the bottom of the hole, so his thumb tip is in the void under the slug. If I am interpreting this wrong, please let me know, but that is not how a slug is supposed to be installed...

Two Handed and One Handed Deliveries

Hey Cow, I actually meant for shooting spares - if the two handers want to throw it straighter, put the thumb in and set up as for a one handed spare but keep the off hand resting on the ball for a while. Not sure how it would work in practise, though. Jim, contacting the rules and ethic...

Two Handed and One Handed Deliveries

What happens if you put your thumb in but still swing it (mostly) 2 handed? Basically just rest the left hand on the ball through the swing?

Two Handed and One Handed Deliveries

Shane, as the rule is written that would be a perfectly legal delivery. You have not changed the side of the body you release from, nor whether you bowl one or two handed. It may well be worth the original posters while to check whether the travelling league he bowls in is classified as a...

Two Handed and One Handed Deliveries

Unfortunately, the issue is not whether the league is scratch or handicap - the rule relates to establishing an average in league. That means it applies to all league play.

Two Handed and One Handed Deliveries

Whether the ball is released by Belmo et al with one hand or two is immaterial - the style they use is known as two-handed. The rule doesn't seem very clear, but has evidently been confirmed by John Coxen that it applies to one hand vs two handed deliveries. Personally, I feel that this is a...

    How Important is Accuracy?

Of course not. I am saying there is 1/4" of clearance under the ball at a point 35mm from the contact point. So if you are using a target 1/4" high, you need to miss either side by 35mm to miss it.

    How Important is Accuracy?

Jim, Given that a ball is 8.5" in diameter, to hit a 1/4" piece of plasticine you have to get the centre of the ball within about 35mm each side of the plasticine to hit. Geometry 101. Run it as a 10" roll across the boards, that will show you where the ball is actually going. If you...

Hi Sue, Can you add me to C squad please.

    How Important is Accuracy?

Jim, I'm not calling you a liar. I think you deeply believe that you are that accurate. However... Look up 'unconscious inference'. Our eyes are actually very poorly designed, and it has been proven that most of what we see is shaped by our previous experiences. The McGurk (sp?) effect is one...

Matt, I have organised Jordan McCahill and me to bowl with you - Have one other person yet to confirm. Will talk to you Wed nite.

    How Important is Accuracy?

Since you ignored the second post, Jim, I will make one more suggestion. Take a piece of carbon paper, and tape it across your target area with a blank sheet on top. The marks left will tell you whether you are as accurate as you think, and also whether the ball trajectory through the target...

    How Important is Accuracy?

That won't work in todays game. Lanes change so fast you need to watch the ball path to pick up what adjustments you need to make from frame to frame. Watch the ball from target to pin deck. Lifting your head after you let it go won't affect the shot. Doesn't explain the spare shooting...

    How Important is Accuracy?

How far down the lane are you targeting, Jim? I'm sticking to my guns - I cannot see any way anyone with any knowledge of the game at all can be hitting 1 board at the arrows and averaging 175. If you are spotting 2 feet down the lane, then that's a different story. 1 board at the dots is three...

    How Important is Accuracy?

Jim, not being nasty, but you are kidding yourself. You don't miss easy spares with 70-80% 1 board accuracy. Get someone who can actually see to watch you, or video your bowling. 80% 1 board accuracy is world class.

Back to basics series - could we do it?

Most House balls are urethane these days Mick.

Back to basics series - could we do it?

Why not have an 8 game "pancake challenge" - no resin, no dynamic blocks - on the Friday night before one of the larger tournaments? (I would have said plastic, but I want to use the slatey :) )

    Silver Membership & Rankings

Hi all, Got my Silver membership card, and the attached letter that says ranking is automatic for silver members. Queried this with TBA, since I'm not on the ranked players list. Apparently many people are not filling in their DOB on the registration, which is required to be listed in the...

Back to basics series - could we do it?

Why? Pancake plastic is all the same. Most people have a plastic spare ball (well, ok - I don't) but nobody who does is going to buy another one for a one off tourney just because they don't have the right brand on their one.

Knowing the oil pattern in advance

Looks to me like you answered your own question, Jason. Most high average league bowlers simply have no idea as to their true skill level.
